Replace Hazelwood with Clean Energy

A growing coalition of community groups are campaigning for the State and Federal governments to make a commitment to replace Hazelwood power station with clean energy by 2012.

Hazelwood is the dirtiest coal fired power station in Australia and one of the most polluting in the developed world.

As part of the campaign, we are campaigning against new coal exports from Victoria and the constructing of the proposed new HRL coal-fired power station.

HRL: A dirty secret

The campaign so far

Three people were arrested in March 2009 attempting to shut off the supply of coal to Hazelwood as part of Earth Hour. September 2009, hundreds of people hold a mass rally at Hazelwood power station, scores of people are arrested. In November, Victorian environment groups make replacing Hazelwood a key election demand. In March the national climate summit also backs Hazelwood as a key election test.
In the first half of 2010, inner city climate groups have been doorknocking their community, letterboxing information and holding snap actions and flash mobs at Labor MPs events. Actions also continue in the La Trobe Valley.

In May people from across Melbourne took the message to the State Government with a rally on Parliament Steps.
